I thought the back looked too busy. I was planning on leaving just the 4motion badge, but then I thought it looked better completely clean. I’ve got a plain black license plate border ordered, and I made an appointment to get it tinted this week. Finally I snapped some slightly better pics at the grocery store.

Sometimes you leave the badges on for comic effect.

I’ll probably pull the trigger on the S in the coming weeks. I looked carefully at the differences and the only ones I’ll miss (vs the SEL) are the smartkey, the panoramic sunroof, and the Fender audio. I couldn’t care less about automatic park features. I might miss power seats and the bigger screen , but from my VW experiences I’m leaning towards something with less to break :)

T he one I’m looking at is silver, but has the Marrakesh brown interior, which is a big seller for me. The other one they have in stock (same price, under $25k) is red with tan interior. I’m also going to debadge, but will probably wait on chipping until closer to the end of the warranty, or at least until I’ve paid the car off.

Looks good!  Curious what you are paying for tint?  I want to tint my V60 which has the same numbers of windows as your Alltrack.

Good call on debadging, looks much cleaner. I think those wheels look quite nice.

I’m surprised it’s not “FLOG”.

The wheels and lighting package were the main reasons I decided I wanted an SE. I also like that I can switch on all of the driving nannies when I have the kiddo in the car.

Yes, that auto park feature is for the birds. If you can’t parallel park on your own, drive off a cliff.

But yes, the smart key, bigger screen, and gigantic sun roof are nice to have.

I didn’t think they did a “ silver” after 2017, just grey? Is the one you’re looking at used/left over?

I ended up with Titan Black, obvi I would have gone for the brown had it been available.

$750 for 3M Crystalline

$550 for Huper Optik Ceramic

The place I go to starts at $200 for larger cars the rest depends on the type of tint.

Does your V60 have annoying little corner windows that are separate from the door up front? That made it a little more expensive for me.

I’m going with 30% all the way around with the Huper Optik Ceramic. I did the 3M Crystalline on my wife’s Forester, but don’t like the hue as much as the Huper stuff.

It’s VAG, they have like 12 versions of silver/gray :)

It’s the same color as yours.

I’m also looking at a 2017 at Carmax (SEL) with mileage in the high 50s, $21k. The mileage is insane for 2 years old, but you also know it was probably a lot of highway driving, but it’s one owner and a semi-local car (no rust). All the bells and whistles, which seems like feature overkill for a compact/sporty car like this.

Also, being a 2017, the warranty is long gone — that 6/72k warranty is a big selling point for me and I know I’ll just end up paying Carmax another $2k for another 30k-50k miles of marginal coverage with their extended plan.

Funny because this is the exact same discussion the wife and I had with the Odyssey in 2014: We compared a 4-year-old Carmax model, loaded; or for a few grand more, a brand new mid-range model with full warranty. I still don’t regret the choice to buy new at all.

Thanks! Yea the wheels pushed me into the SE over the S as I would have immediately changed out the wheels had I bought the S

This would be the car we would be the car we get if we decided to leave the 8 seat life.

Gotcha. I was only asking because I would have been down for a true “silver” too.

Ya the warranty was a big seller for me as well. Wife and I also had that discussion, I also don’t regret buying new.

It’s only a matter of time before everyone on oppo has a Golf of one flavor or another.

My wife’s next one will need to be that big. We can get ourselves, the baby, an 150lb English Mastiff, a 70lb Boxer and our gear for 5 days in the Forester without using the roof rack. However when I was growing up, we always took two cars because either my mom or my dad wanted to “drive” on family trips haha. So we’d take the family car and the fun car.

Yeah, that’s about what I expected. My car has factory tint, but it’s very light. The car is black/bronze (I think they call it Ember Black Metallic) and I want to tint it for looks, more than anything else though t he heat blocking would certainly be welcome. I don’t have those little windows, so that should help some with the cost.

Also, g ood choice of color for the car. When I read that you had skipped over green in favor of the silver you selected I was a little bummed as the pics of the green look awesome. But, I saw a green one over the weekend and it really didn’t look that great, just as you said.

If you tune it, what kind of bump in power can you expect?

Thanks! Yea that green looks great when it’s squeaky shiny clean and not that great any other time.

The APR tune that they will warranty (APR +) takes you from 170 to 234hp.

Can’t believe you didn’t buy a green one! But I get it. Congrats! Keeping the manual wagon dream alive... unlike me. I am not thrilled they’re discontinuing that car, though... WTF man that was one of the few remaining hopes for the manual - or any - wagon choices that I really liked.

Yea after simultaneously seeing the green in person (the car was not clean) and finding out that they were discontinuing the model. I thought, “fuck I gotta get one of these like nowish. It’s the end of the model year, they’re not making one next year and this dealer said that they couldn’t order one...

I actually really like the grey so it worked out. I’m pretty sure Tom McP could have found a way to order one, and or gotten a better deal that I did, but I was nearly done with the whole process when I called Tom. So when I got a decent deal on a car I liked, I took it.

People have asked what made me choose that car in particular. I said “it’s the only wagon available with a manual transmission in the United States!”

I’m sure you’ll be very happy long-term. I think the next closest “wagon with manual” is a Mini Clubman, the one with the barn-door rear end. It’s not as big as the Golf wagon or even as big as my E46 (was) but it it’s a good bit bigger than the regular Mini and it’s not lifted-for-no-reason like the Countryman.

But like you said in another post, our next vehicle is likely to be a big one, like an older Suburban or something. It’ll be so nice as the kids get older for taking all of us and our skis, bikes, dogs, etc. all in one vehicle. Plus I could tow the boat... anyway I digress.

My sister gave me the dealer plate frame for her Rogue, and there wasn’t a sticker on the back. Also, they gave her a plate that expires in 2021 (like the rental cars).

I need to buy some No Smoking stickers and barcodes to stick on the windows.

I didn’t know they still made the Clubman. I haven’t been in love with any newer Minis that I have driven. I loved our R53 cooper S!

Yea if we get any more dogs or kids were going to need a bigmobile. That will be my wife’s.

This was the worst dealer sticker I have ever dealt with, that white oval left 100% of the adhesive behind. I went at it with goo gone, but eventually had to use clay to get everything off. The VW badges were easy! I’m just waiting for my blank plate frame to arrive.

Please do a review someday. I really like these. Also did you ever post why you didn't look for GSW 4motion MTs on the side? Was the Alltrack just much more common to shop for?

One of us...one of us! Crossing my fingers that our AWD MT wagon lasts another 7-8 years, at which point the market will recognize its folly and produce MT wagons again!

I definitely will review in the coming weeks. I didn’t post about it but I did look at a few GSW’s. The main reason is that I like the look of the Alltrack better, closely followed by the fact that you can only have cloth seats w/ manual and AWD . F inally as you said, the Alltrack is an easier find/buy.

Normally I will always go for the painted fender/accents option over black plastic, but I like the way it looks on the Alltrack.

Worst one I have ever seen! Same quality too, as it left 100% of the adhesive behind. After a lot of goo gone, I had to use clay to get rid of all of it. The badges came off so much easier.

Unfortunately for me, I have the shorter commute so I’ll be captain of the Bigmobile. I actually used to have one when I worked at a marina, I used it for towing boats all the time. Sold it before having kids, who does that?

You probably didn’t know they still made the Clubman because it hasn’t really changed. But at least you can get it (all of them actually) with a manual. Yay?

I put one of those ovals with my high schools initials on my Outback but that was only because the original dealer sticker had turned a horrible shade of brown and become one with the clear coat and I wanted to hide it. Otherwise I think they are over sized and ugly.

This post inspired me to finally take my badges off.

Wound up leaving the Alltrack and 4Motion. I can’t tell if I will keep them on or go totally  clean like yours.

I considered doing the same, but obviously decided to take them all off. I felt something was off, so I ordered a silver “ bumperdillo” to break it up. I had planned to put a piece of clear bra on the top of the rear bumper anyway. Then I saw one of these on a GTI and thought “that’s what I need to tie it all together”

Kinja'd!!!

It will be here this week.
